Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Schwarzkopf grew up in the United States and later Iran. He was accepted by the United States Military Academy and was named a lieutenant in the United States Army in 1956. After some initial training programs, Schwarzkopf interrupted his time as an academy teacher and served during the Vietnam War, first as an advisor to the South Vietnamese army, then as a battalion commander. Schwarzkopf has been highly decorated in Vietnam and received three silver stars, two purple hearts and the Certificate of Merit from the Corps. He rose several ranks after the Vietnam War, after which he commanded the 24th Motorized Infantry Division and was one of the commanders of the Grenada invasion of 1983 .
